As scams and attacks swallow the crypto community, Polygon is the new victim.
In crypto news today, Polygon’s community Discord channel has been compromised, raising alarms across the crypto world. Mudit Gupta, Polygon’s Chief Information Security Officer, confirmed the breach and urged users to steer clear of any links within the Discord channel until the issue is fully resolved.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Polygon community, despite assurances from Gupta that all privileged accounts had two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled.
The impact of the breach is already being felt. One user took to X to sound the alarm. They warned that the Polygon Discord support channel was overrun with users seeking help, only to be deceived by scammers posing as legitimate support agents.
The gravity of the situation became stark when another user, ValidatorK, reported a devastating loss—$150,000 worth of Ether (ETH) vanished from their pool after interacting with what seemed to be an official announcement on Polygon’s Discord channel.
This attack on Polygon’s Discord is just the latest in a troubling series of breaches targeting the crypto community. On March 25, 2023, blockchain security firm CertiK exposed a phishing scam on the Arbitrum Discord server, believed to have been executed via a hacked developer account. The scam involved a fake announcement laced with a malicious link.
The timing of this breach is particularly worrisome for Polygon, as the platform is in the midst of a major network upgrade. As per the latest crypto news, on September 4, Polygon is set to replace its native MATIC token with POL tokens, a move designed to broaden the utility of its native token and support its expanding network of aggregated blockchains, known as AggLayer.
